Meet the Guest Speaker:
Dr. Sanat Pokharel PH.D., P.ENG
Professor Adjunct Dr. Sanat Pokharel, P.Eng. Principal Engineer at Stratum Logics in Edmonton, Alberta, has 37 years of civil engineering experience. He also serves as an adjunct Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Victoria. He is a reviewer of major Geotechnical and Geosynthetic Journals and has himself authored more than seventy publications.
He holds Ph.D. with honors from the University of Kansas, M.Sc. from Norway and B.E. from IIT, India. He is the recipient of UNDP and NORAD fellowships for Bachelor and M.Sc. and Ruben Zadigan Scholarship for Ph.D. He is registered professional engineer in 6 Canadian provinces and territories and is a member of ASTM, ASCE, GI and TAC. He is the recipient of the Minister’s award for Transportation innovation 2024 for excellence in design innovation (road stabilization with Geocell).
He has worked with different organizations in Asia, Europe, and North America. His experience includes geosynthetic reinforced load support and erosion control works, mainly for roads, pads, railways, and steep slopes. Of over 400 projects designed in Canada, a few notable ones are, Causeway at Grizzly Oil sands; Access Roads (16 Km) and a foundation pad for crane at Christina Lake facility of MEG Energy; CANFOR Logging Yards; creek crossings for Haul Roads at Suncor Fort Hills facility; Buffalo Creek access road (11km), Otter Lake, Goodfish, wooden house, Hidden Lake and Blainville compressor Station pads for TC energy; rehabilitation of flood damaged HBR Churchill Railway track in permafrost region: slope and erosion control work at Edmonton LRT tunnel portal.
