Meet the Speaker
Dr. Richard J. Bathurst,
P. Eng., BASc., M.Sc., Ph.D., FRSC, FEIC, FCAE, FCSCE, M.ASCE
Dr. Richard J. Bathurst, P. Eng., is Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada, with a cross-appointment at Queen’s University and an adjunct professorship at Ryerson University in Canada. He is a leading expert in the design and analysis of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls and slopes. His work has advanced the understanding and application of geosynthetic and metallic reinforcements in earth retention, with significant contributions to seismic performance, environmental impact assessment, and reliability-based design of these systems. Dr. Bathurst has served on committees for the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, the National Building Code of Canada, and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Committee T-15 Substructures and Retaining Walls. He is the lead author of two chapters in the 5th edition of the CGS Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual and served as the technical lead for the Transportation Association of Canada’s Guide to Design, Construction, Maintenance, and Inspection of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Walls.
A highly respected figure in geotechnics, he is the Editor-in-Chief of Geosynthetics International and has received numerous prestigious awards, including the ASCE Geo-Institute’s Middlebrooks Award and the Engineering Institute of Canada’s Julian C. Smith Medal. Dr. Bathurst’s work in MSE walls and slopes is complemented by extensive contributions to other areas of geotechnical engineering. He is a past President of the Engineering Institute of Canada (2016–2018), the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) (2013–2014), the International Geosynthetics Society (1998–2002), and the North American Geosynthetics Society (1998). He is the ASCE Geo-Institute Cross-USA Lecturer for 2024–25.
